Surveillance

We’re convinced that somehow Facebook is listening in to our spoken conversations.

November 24.

Me: “Honey, do we have any kitchen twine so I can truss up this turkey?”

Facebook later that day: “Here’s white cotton yarn.”

November 20.

I was taking Luna for her late-night walk and waved hello to our next door neighbor. He was using a leaf blower, and I was amazed at how quiet it was. So I asked “What kind of blower is that? It’s so quiet!” He told me it was electric, which obviously, and I told him that mine is electric too and it’s noisy as hell. So he checked the label and told me it was made by GreenWorks.

I’d never heard of them before, and made a mental note to go look for them because I think that loud blowers are tools of the devil, but raking is hard work.

Anyway, I go home and as I’m catching up on my news feed what pops up but an ad for GreenWorks lawn tools.

I just checked the permissions on my phone, and several apps — including Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram — were set to allow use of my microphone while the app was open. Could it be listening in while the app was open in the background?

I’m sure I’d turned those off though. We’ll see what happens next time there’s an update.
