Again it’s time to mark my anniversary of living in the east. 39 years ago today I hopped on a plane from Cleveland Hopkins and landed in LaGuardia, and somehow I stuck. Two marriages, two kids, four apartments, three (soon to be four) houses, seven jobs (plus a lot of temp and consulting gigs), eight cars, three bicycles and a lot of good fortune.
What was New York like in 1979? The same in some ways (they haven’t expanded the subway!), but in almost every other sense it’s hugely different. Here are some photos I cribbed from the Internet (which didn’t exist in 1979).
Nothing is affordable anymore.
