Wednesday: The Immigration Crisis

Enough of the lies, deceit and fake news, they tell us.

I’m starting this mid-week, because one big lie has started to become persistent. You can see it if you click the thumbnail to the left. The complete dishonesty of this meme is truly worthy of Goebbels, or the Kremlin. On several levels.

  1. First, it’s important to note that this was part of the massive bill that created Homeland Security. In the wake of 9/11, with a big mid-term election coming up, the state of the nation less than a year later could be described as mass hysteria. Keeping us safe from terrorism was the major campaign issue of the day.
  2. Here in 2018, there are massive protests brewing over children being separated from their parents at the border. Again: children, accompanied by their parents, are being separated from them and dropped into who-knows-what system. But the highlighted text that’s the Democrats’ fault refers only to unaccompanied children.
  3. Political parties don’t pass laws. The legislative branch passes them, and then a President has to sign them (give or take a veto/override situation) before the actually become law. At the time, the President was a Republican — George W. Bush.
  4. Well, but did a Democrat-controlled Congress “pass” them? The Senate at the time was 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans and 2 independents. The Democrats held the chair, though. If you take the meme at face value, the Democrats must have squeezed out a 51-49 win. But actually it passed 90-9, and here’s the vote breakdown:
Not a single Republican “no” vote in the Senate.
  5. Did the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives pull a fast one? No; the Republicans controlled the House of Representatives, holding a ~24-vote majority. Here’s the breakdown of that:
You can spot the Republican “no” votes if you look closely.

The lying from the right wing has become a reflex action. I’m a little bit gratified that some of the religious right is delaminating itself from Trump over this. I don’t know if it will persist.

Thursday

This about covers it:

Friday: In Search Of Meaning

It’s heartless.

It’s summer camp!

Obama did it too!

It’s not happening, just like it happened when Obama was President.

The jacket means nothing.

The jacket means everything.

It’s the Democrats’ fault.

It’s the Democrats’ fault.

It’s the Democrats’ fault.

It’s the Democrats’ fault.

It’s the Democrats’ fault.

I’m only talking to Republicans

The Democrats won’t talk to me.

It’s the Democrats’ fault?

As usual, whichever argument seems convenient at that given moment is the one they make. Their drones don’t care. When Big Brother rewrites history, they’re the first to throw their old books down the memory hole. Nobody will even have to ask them.

As soon as all the corrections which happened to be necessary in any particular number of The Times had been assembled and collated, that number would be reprinted, the original copy destroyed, and the corrected copy placed on the files in its stead. This process of continuous alteration was applied not only to newspapers, but to books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters, leaflets, films, sound-tracks, cartoons, photographs – to every kind of literature or documentation which might conceivably hold any political or ideological significance. Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date. In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct, nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. Orwell, 1984
