The old Whitney, up on Madison Avenue, never ever disappointed me. Every single time I went there I found something new and wonderful. So when they decided to depart from the Breuer building for new digs at the south end of the High Line, I watched with real interest. Since opening last year, we never had a chance to stop by (and brave the crowds) until today.
That’s because #1 son out in California gave us a membership for Christmas! Thanks! E. and I got to skip the line and skip right in!
The terraces are, yes, very cool. Fortunately it was a moderate day (for December). Besides great views…
They’ve got a lot of art out there that you couldn’t see in the old space.
The big show, occupying all of the fifth floor, was a retrospective of Frank Stella’s paintings. Paintings is a word used with implicit air quotes — these go flying off the walls.

“Earthquake in Chile” is a work, it’s hard to describe how big it is. The complexity is overwhelming.
