Yesterday walking around the flats I took this photo, which is actually the frame of a pivot bridge (I think it’s called), across a channel of the Cuyahoga River.

Shortly after taking it, a loud claxon went off, and railroad bells started to ring. I wasn’t near any tracks so I just hung around where I was, continuing to snap off photos. Realizing I was on a drawbridge of some kind, I looked behind me and noticed that I’d been blocked in by the road guards that had swung down. I made sure I was clear enough of anything that looked like it was going to move, and waited to see what happened.
Technically I wasn’t supposed to go on to the bridge while it was opening; but technically I already was on the bridge while it was opening. Right?
So it slowly started to glide open.

Yup, since pedestrians aren’t supposed to be there anyway, the sidewalk all of a sudden just ended. Next stop, the still-toxic River.

So what causes all this huge machinery to move aside? A huge ship.

Just about filling the narrow channel.

It kept coming into view, longer and longer. I really didn’t know how to estimate the length.

Look closely and you can see a man standing up there. No, I did not get a photo release.

Too big even for my 18mm to take in.

Finally all in sight.

It’s amazing what the “crooked river” can accommodate.
