Two nights in a row on Assoteague Island we got to watch thunderstorms roll in from the mainland. It’s big-sky country out there, and it was hard to get a real handle on how far away they were or where they were headed.
Thursday night’s was the real showstopper. We watched it approach for a half-hour.

Before packing up and heading to the car.

It looked like it was going to be exciting so we stuck around for a while.

I stood around with my finger on the shutter, and got lucky a couple of times.

When the rain came, it was a tropical deluge.
Friday was a near-miss. We got a bit of rain, but got to watch it head off way to the north.

In the ‘burbs of New Jersey you don’t often get to see a heavy storm from the side like this.

We used the time during the shower to ride around the nature preserve.

Afterwards, we headed back to the beach, hoping to spend a little quiet time after sunset. But there were about 20 million flying ants (or something) that had just hatched. A Biblical Plague, the cloud of them stretched at least from one end of the parking lot to the other — about a mile and a half — and about a quarter mile inland. They were covering the windshield, all over the hood, and it sounded like rain as they bounced off the car.
