Hard to believe it was 41 years ago*.
Kottke will be replaying the live CBS broadcasts of the landing and the first steps on the Moon, in “real time,” later today. Tune in here at 4:10 pm EDT for Walter Cronkite’s live broadcast of the landing, and again at 10:51 pm EDT for the epochal first step. Details and technical requirements are here.**
I didn’t see it on TV when it happened. We were out camping, I believe it was here, on that date. After my parents, my brother and I listened in on a scratchy AM radio station in some faraway town, I walked outside and looked up at the orange moon.

*harder still to believe we haven’t gone further. The Hubble, Mars landers, and Voyagers are great — especially the photos — but when does my commercial flight to the space station take off?
**if you miss the “live” playing, the clips are archived on YouTubehere, and here.
I remember being very underwhelmed by the first images that were broadcast that night. I was expecting color/movie quality images.
I was just an 11 year old so I guess I can be forgiven for being so demanding.
