Loantaka Brook

Yesterday was kind of a nasty, cold and windy way to start a vacation. Nevertheless we tried a walk in the Great Swamp. Too windy or something, there was no sign of wildlife (other than us) to be found. On the way back we took a look at the bike path in Loantaka Brook park, which made for a nice 2.6 mile walk. Got a few pictures in, too. blue_forest

Altogether there is probably seven miles of paved pathways through the woods here, stretching from Green Village near Chatham, NJ, out to Morristown. When the weather’s nice it’s a real haven for families taking their young ones out for a spin. It’s a little too crowded for the hard-core types, who tend to keep to the main roads. The light yesterday had this interesting bluish color because of the overcast and the color of the predominant tree in that part of the forest, the beech.

The first signs of spring here in the swamp areas is the skunk cabbage. Heavy rains on Friday left a lot of standing water, very transparent.

At the end of the first section was a huge pasture, with this well-built red-brick barn. brick_barn
