Suburban Archaeology, Part II

Back to Watchung Reservation, exploring the ruins of an old mill and rock quarry. Approaching from the southwest, past the foundation hold explored yesterday, we found the remains of a large poured concrete floor in the woods.

If you look closely at this stone, you can see indentations carved in where floor joists would have sat.

E. helpfully shows the scale of the place.

We found three corners on land, and one corner in the river. The buildings were made out of several kinds of materials — mortared stone, a poured concrete conglomerate, and brick. We figured that it showed the complex was built and then expanded upon several times.

Circling above to the top of the cliffs, we found this strange remnant. It was directly above the easternmost part of the complex.

There were a few points at which I could get a firm enough footing to get close to the edge without being at risk. From here I could see the concrete floor and the footprints of a couple of the buildings shown above.
