Lost and Found

While E. and I were hiking on Watchung Reservation this afternoon, we found the foundations of an abandoned building, and lying nearby in plain sight this souvenir. bottle

There is an oval embossing near the neck, not really visible here, that says:

Curlice Brothers Co.
Preservers
Rochester, NY

A little Googling tells us this was a bottle of ketchup produced by that company (a forerunner of today’s Birds Eye foods) sometime after 1896 but not later than 1925.

On the way from the car to the hike we watched a couple of teenage kids down by Seeley’s Pond amusing themselves by throwing rocks at a couple of the ducks swimming nearby. Somehow, this bottle remained intact for over 80 years with them, and their fathers before them, in the neighborhood.

A small miracle!
