Obama Interview with Rachel Maddow

October 31st, 2008 | 0 Comments | Politics |

Rachel Maddow had an interesting interview with Obama last night on her MSNBC show. The clip is at the jump, but I especially liked the exchange on the budget deficit and infrastructure investment:

One of the most frustrating things over the last eight years has been the ability of George Bush to pile up debts and huge deficits, and not have anything to show for it.

Imagine a future where we have a president who can talk intelligently and clearly about issues, and not just repeat slogans. It’s right around the corner if you go out and vote for it.

David Gessetti and the Threat to the Fabric of Democracy

When I was in high school a couple of that year’s seniors — friends of mine from band — posed as fake people to get their pictures into the junior class section. One, looking like a BMOC, called himself “Duke Love.” The other, unshaven and in a plaid shirt and skinny bow tie, called himself […]

The Broadway Bach Ensemble presents its first concert of the season this Sunday, October 26. Michael Adelson conducts, Christopher Oldfather is the piano soloist in Bartok’s Third Concerto, plus Mozart’s Symphony No. 34 and the premiere of Adelson’s new work “Terminus.” We rehearsed Terminus for the first time last night, and it’s kind of interesting. Today’s Required Political Reading

I know, “Oh stop with the politics already.” But hey, there’s an important election coming up so it’s on my mind. I promise after the election I’ll start writing about movies, books and travel again. This morning’s New York Times devotes the entire editorial column space to its endorsement of Obama for President. While this […]

Hay Fever

Just when I thought I’d escaped seasonal allergies this year, all of a sudden they’ve fallen onto my head like a safe dropped out of a fifth-story window. You know that feeling when your nose tickles and you know you’re on the edge about to sneeze in the next couple of seconds? I’ve felt like […]

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

October 21st, 2008 | 0 Comments | Movies |

Based on the book and directed by artist Julian Schnabel, it’s the true story of Jean-Dominique Bauby, who suffered a catastrophic stroke in 1995 which left him totally paralyzed except for his left eye. Over the next two years he dictated, blinking letter by letter, this memoir. We caught this film on DVD the other night. […]
