Walking Around Philadelphia

August 31st, 2008 | 0 Comments | Art, Travelogues |

The nice thing about Philadelphia is it’s of a very manageable size for walking. A “full featured” town that has all the amenities and attractions, yet you can get to all the good stuff just on foot. Last week we spent a couple of days there, and here are some of the sights.

Sarah Palin

What can I add to the discussion of her being on the GOP ticket? Not much, just about everything (and its polar opposite) has been written somewhere already. But one thing I’d like to note about this is, the days of major party tickets made up solely of two white men is over. Starting now, inclusion of a woman or minority on a ticket will be the rule.

Obama Hits One Out Of The Park

August 29th, 2008 | 0 Comments | Politics |

So to speak. To this casual political observer, he pushed all the right buttons last night. I especially like the tack he’s going to take in going after McCain on foreign policy and the economy. If he keeps this up, and doesn’t go all squishy like Kerry did, he’s going to win. But besides that, the […]

Caro on LBJ / Obama

August 28th, 2008 | 0 Comments | Politics |

Robert Caro’s long-running series on the life of Lyndon Johnson is a must-read for anyone interested in American history. In today’s Times he contributes an elaboration of the prelude to the most recent entry, recounting the night Johnson introduced the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in an address to Congress, quoting “we shall overcome,” and that […]

Short and Far Hills

August 24th, 2008 | 0 Comments | Biking |

Today’s ride was 41.4 miles from a parking lot in Short Hills, NJ out to Far Hills. Along the way, a few moderate climbs — such as right out of the box up to Summit — and a few cows. I also saw a pair of turkey vultures rummaging through the remains of a dead deer […]

Following up on a suggestion to see a remarkable mural that a friend-of-a-friend had done, we hiked west down Walnut Street Thursday afternoon to check it out.

Sports Question

August 18th, 2008 | 0 Comments | Baseball |

Here’s a mash-up of a couple of sports articles that were in the paper this morning. Michael Phelps, in an almost scripted move, shatters eight world records and wins eight gold medals in the Olympics. Other world records — the men’s 100 meters for example — are falling like rain. Dara Torres, age 41, misses a […]
