Riding My Age: Take One

May 31st, 2008 | 2 Comments | Biking |

More not-great luck with the cycle club this morning. The scheduled ride was for 52 miles, which would have fulfilled my New Year’s resolution to ride my before spring was out. However with threatening weather in the forecast and cloudy skies already, only five people showed up. But we all decided to give it a go, and off we went.

Up In Honey’s Room

May 30th, 2008 | 0 Comments | Books |

Somehow this latest entry from Elmore Leonard slipped by me when it was published. I picked up a copy at a library booksale, thinking I’d find it entertaining.
Meh. This sequel to “The Hot Kid” is not-so-hot, a Leonard-by-the-numbers timekiller that smells like something baked up to fill a contractual obligation. Good thing it only [...]

Comcast Hacked

May 29th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Tech Stuff |

While travelling last week I was really annoyed to learn that I couldn’t check my Comcast e-mail using my regular e-mail client (Thunderbird), because their firewall prevents access from outside the comcast.net network. I could still read it using their web mail, but that’s an inferior option since it doesn’t let me keep a trail [...]

Bike Trip Maps

May 28th, 2008 | 7 Comments | Biking |

Andy’s blog shows a very slick map of the trip he took recently. It comes from MapMyRide.com, which appears to be a GoogleMaps mash-up. Here’s my entry, of the Great Swamp trip I took a few weeks ago.

“The Road” on Film

May 27th, 2008 | 0 Comments | Books, Movies |

The Times ran a good story on the filming of Cormac McCarthy’s novel. Viggo Mortenson stars as the father, and newcomer Kodi Smit-McPhee is the boy.
While the novel takes place on a trek from the mountains of the south down towards to Gulf coast, the producers have used Pennsylvania, for a couple of reasons [...]

Cleveland Wrap-up

May 26th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Family, Home, Travelogues |

I got back Saturday night from my trip to Ohio for my aunt’s funeral. Nobody likes funerals of course, nor the deaths of loved ones. But one of the things you learn while mourning a relative who has died is how many of them have not.
So after a few days I was happy. Happy [...]

A New Look

May 25th, 2008 | 0 Comments | Tech Stuff |

I decided to go ahead with the new theme, based on one of my “Great Swamp” photos. I’m still debugging it in some of the more obscure browsers (I’m looking at you, IE6), so let me know if you see anything especially wrong.
Some of the new features are the calendar that lets you hover [...]

Weak and Biased News Reporting

May 25th, 2008 | 0 Comments | Politics |

Last April I wrote a post about CBS’ evening news program, and until this last week I hadn’t bothered to watch another episode. But being at my parents’ house where the news is always on, I caught them in action again. I’d like to say, “I watch Katie Couric so you don’t have to,” but [...]

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

May 24th, 2008 | 0 Comments | Movies |

Caught the new Indy (as in Jones) film the other day while in Ohio. Despite what you might read in the writings of some of the cattier critics it’s good fun.
Set 20 years after the first three films, the Nazis are long gone and the Soviets (or, as they like to call them, “commies”) [...]

Bumping Up Gas Mileage on the PA Turnpike

May 22nd, 2008 | 1 Comment | Travelogues |

Driving to Ohio yesterday I decided to see what a few new tactics would do to my gas mileage. One, I decided to not drive like a maniac — accelerating, shifting lanes, and vying for every bit of advantage over other cars. Two, reduce my cruise-control speed from my usual maniacal 80-85 mph down to [...]

Near Miss

May 19th, 2008 | 0 Comments | Home |

Sitting out in the yard a little while ago I heard a loud crack. This branch had broken off and fallen to the street, right between these two cars, and right at the entrance to a ballfield where all the little kids are having their soccer league right now. Not a scratch on the cars or the kids, fortunately. It knocked down some lines, so the police and fire departments have the road closed off.

Something interesting is always happening around here.
