Mahler 4th This Sunday

January 30th, 2008 | 5 Comments | Music |

If you’re wandering around the upper west side of Manhattan this Sunday, stop on by and hear The Broadway Bach Ensemble’s free concert. We’re doing the Bach “Wedding Cantata,” and Mahler’s Fourth Symphony. The soprano soloist is Silvie Jensen who, from what I heard at rehearsal the other night, is the bomb.
I’m especially psyched [...]

Passage: Compact Video Game With A Big Idea

January 27th, 2008 | 0 Comments | Tech Stuff |

You have to try this ultra-minimalist game. The whole thing weighs in at less than 2MB, but it’s remarkable the amount of content and meaning he works in. I know, strange concepts for a computer game that looks like something out of early Atari. Install it, play it, then read the author’s notes.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut

January 26th, 2008 | 0 Comments | Movies |

Last month marked twenty-five years since the release of the original “Blade Runner,” and in recognition “The Final Cut” was released theatrically and on DVD. I picked up my copy last week, and compared it with my memories of the original.
Now I’ve always had a weakness for sci-fi in general, but Blade Runner set [...]

Vinyl To Digital

If you’re of a “certain age” and you’re a music lover, you’ve got a stack of vinyl records laying around somewhere and no way to play them in your car. I’d been mulling this over for a while, with most of the pieces of the puzzle laying around here, and finally figured out a “duh” [...]

The Giants Are Going To The Super Bowl

Not like I’ve followed football at all this year. But the game tonight against Green Bay has to go down as one of the classic playoff games. Two closely matched teams shot it out, with big plays, and very few turnovers. Good officiating too, such penalties as there were, were all legit. And the [...]

The Funny Papers

Lots of people have secret vices. Things that they do that they know are not good for them, but they get a secret satisfaction from doing them anyway. Things like watching soap operas, eating CoolWhip, going to Adam Sandler movies. Well I’ve got a secret, too.
I like to read The Wall Street Journal editorial [...]

No Country For Old Men

January 16th, 2008 | 0 Comments | Books, Movies |

Going to a movie is one thing. Reading a book is another. For many years I’ve been an avid reader of Cormac McCarthy. I’ve made it a point, in fact, to read everything by him at least twice. McCarthy’s style is heavy on landscape and theme, with plot somewhat de-emphasized. There is plot, and sometimes [...]

The New transitionworks.org

January 15th, 2008 | 0 Comments | Tech Stuff |

This morning we launched version 2 of transitionworks.org, the community site for members and participants of TransitionWorks.
It’s a radical simplification of the version 1 site, which tried to do more than it really needed to. After giving what users were doing some scrutiny, we honed it down to a few vital functions and got [...]
