The Ergonomics of Vinyl Records

A friend just donated a stack of really interesting LPs (thanks Annie!). As I work through them (right now I’m listening to “The Late Fourteenth Century Avant Garde” — I love medieval music) I notice that I have to get up every 20–30 minutes to change sides. Isn’t that what all the ergonomic experts recommend? That […]
Sandy Hook, October 21
October 23rd, 2007 | 2 Comments | Travelogues |
Another great place I’d never been. Just 40 miles from my home in Maplewood, Sandy Hook is a spit of land off the easternmost tip of New Jersey that, with the Rockaway peninsula, frames the outer New York Harbor.

Damn Red Sox

To paraphrase the title of a famous Broadway musical. I was not pleased when the Yankees got bounced from the playoffs, but since I grew up in Cleveland I could still root for the Indians, right? And they did thoroughly outplay the Yankees after all. When the Indians went up three games to one, I was […]
Brahms’ Fifth?

Shameless concert plug: This Sunday, October 21 at 3 pm, at St. Anne’s Church on Montague Street, Brooklyn Heights, the Brooklyn Symphony performs its first concert of the year.
This orchestra’s programs are almost always interesting, featuring a lot of the kind of works that we “volunteer” musicians don’t get to do very often, and this one’s no exception.

The Big Sit

I stopped by the Swamp today to shoot some pictures, and came across this group.

The annual “Big Sit” brings bird watchers out for a 24-hour marathon. They draw a circle in the parking lot at the overlook, bring their telescopes, binoculars and 400mm lenses and catalog every bird they see.

Take a look at the animation on the jump page. Do you see the dancer spinning clockwise or counterclockwise? If clockwise, you’re right-brained. If counterclockwise, left. There’s a poll attached, so please register your predeliction.

True Tales of Hardware Quality and Customer Service
My (good and bad) experiences with the Epson Photo 1400 and the Canon Pro9000 large-format printers. This is a man-bites-dog story. We (or at least I) have gotten used to pretty good hardware and pretty bad customer service. In this case I found myself with a lemon but the experience was salvaged by spot-on service.
Game Three

The Bergen Record reports George Steinbrenner saying that Torre won’t be back next year if the Yankees don’t win this series. Meanwhile, it looks as though the road to the World Series is going to run through Boston, which is up 9–0 over the Angels in the eighth. Back to Steinbrenner. He’s also quoted as […]
Game Two

As the late, great Scooter would have said, “holy cow!” A monster pitching matchup tonight. A few random thoughts: Lofton is having a great series, but twice tonight he broke one of the cardinal rules, never make the first or last out at third base. Quote of the day from Carmona: “I’m not intimidated by the […]
