Beyond the First Six Pages

June 24th, 2007 | 0 Comments | Books, Politics |

A while back I laid into David Brooks’ op-ed in the Times on Al Gore’s “Assault on Reason.” I used the word “review” earlier, but with a certain hesitation because after going through it myself I get the sense that every point Brooks addresses in his review can be found in the first six pages […]

Roaming Kids

June 21st, 2007 | 0 Comments | Home |

Kottke points out this item, “How children lost the right to roam in four generations,” which studies a family across several generations and maps the area within their children were free to roam at age 8. When my kids got to be that age, I thought it was one of those modern paranoid-American things (viz “Bowling […]

New Dollar Coins

June 18th, 2007 | 5 Comments | Art |

Is it just me, or is this the ugliest coin in US numismatic history? I got a couple of these at Penn Station this evening, and they looked and felt like carnival tokens. Obverse

Fight Club

June 10th, 2007 | 0 Comments | Movies |

I finally got around to watching this tonight. Probably the worst great movie I’ve ever seen. Or the best terrible movie. The first two-thirds were brilliant, but that last section — WTF? I could have really done without that alternate-persona twist. It’s an OK idea, but did it have to be so literal?

The crazy things people believe

June 9th, 2007 | 2 Comments | Politics, Science |

Orgtheory highlights the result of a poll done by a scientific group, including the questions “Now, does the Earth go around the Sun, or does the Sun go around the Earth?,” and “How long does it take for the Earth to go around the Sun: one day, one month, or one year?” The surprising results: a […]

Previewing Typefaces, Backgrounds and Colors with sIFR

June 5th, 2007 | 0 Comments | Tech Stuff |

This might not be the perfect cross-browser solution as is; but as a proof-of-concept here is a font previewer using sIFR, the CSS/Javascript/Flash method for embedding real fonts into your web page. It’s usually used for headlines and other display copy, but with a little elbow grease it can be used for this kind of preview as well. I’m using it for a custom-embroidery client to show different monogram styles and colors against the colors of various shirt and hat colors.

You can read the details and play with the demo right over here…

How ‘Bout Those Cavs

June 3rd, 2007 | 0 Comments | Home |

Faithful readers know I grew up in Cleveland, and believe me I remember when the Cavs were the laughingstock of the NBA. For a while, the Cavs of the Mark Price era were serious competitors, but unfortunately their contemporaries were Michael Jordan’s Bulls. So they were always the bridesmaid in their conference. I’m no basketball fan, but congratulations to LeBron James and Clevelanders everywhere on making the finals. LeBron James Bobblehead DollNow finish it off and take the trophy home.

Late Spring in South Mountain

June 2nd, 2007 | 0 Comments | Travelogues |

Starting in the cooler days of late April, my friend B and I spent some time off the beaten path in South Mountain Reservation hunting morels. While we never found any, for whatever reason, one good side benefit was I’ve finally starting learning how to recognize trees. When I was a kid, our family recreation largely […]
