A while back I laid into David Brooks’ op-ed in the Times on Al Gore’s “Assault on Reason.” I used the word “review” earlier, but with a certain hesitation because after going through it myself I get the sense that every point Brooks addresses in his review can be found in the first six pages [...]

Kottke points out this item, “How children lost the right to roam in four generations,” which studies a family across several generations and maps the area within their children were free to roam at age 8.
When my kids got to be that age, I thought it was one of those modern paranoid-American things (viz [...]

Is it just me, or is this the ugliest coin in US numismatic history? I got a couple of these at Penn Station this evening, and they looked and felt like carnival tokens.

Faithful readers know I grew up in Cleveland, and believe me I remember when the Cavs were the laughingstock of the NBA. For a while, the Cavs of the Mark Price era were serious competitors, but unfortunately their contemporaries were Michael Jordan’s Bulls. So they were always the bridesmaid in their conference. I’m no basketball fan, but congratulations to LeBron James and Clevelanders everywhere on making the finals.
Now finish it off and take the trophy home.

When I was a kid, our family recreation [...]
