CubeCart Sucks

In which the author bitches at length about a sucky product, after spending yet another two hours trying to get it to do something … anything … so I can finish this goddam project and get paid.

Games

December 28th, 2006 | 0 Comments | Entertainment |

Cosmic Variance points us to The Sect of Homokaasu, where we find a host of flash based games with a twist. Gravity is a variation on the theme of bodies in orbit. But there’s a twist: the rules of physics aren’t quite what we expect.
“Rhythm” is a fairly maddening ball-bouncing game where again, the [...]

James K. Polk: Wrong For America

December 26th, 2006 | 13 Comments | Comedy |

And you thought the Kennedy assassination conspiracy theorists need to get a life. Some-time Kos diarist manleymcfaghag casts aspersions on the manliness of our eleventh President, who compromised on his “52-40 or fight” campaign pledge and left Vancouver Island and other parts of “Canadian-occupied America” to the Canadians. The site carries political parody to unprecedentedly [...]

Fun With Google Suggest

December 26th, 2006 | 1 Comment | Entertainment, Tech Stuff |

I’ve been using Google Suggest for a long time, and it’s a great tool. I didn’t know it could be fun, too. Try typing in “George Bush Is” and see!

Via our old friend Anthony Cartouche comes this lovely true story about Mel Tormé and his famous “The Christmas Song.” It’s a good one.

Merry Christmas!

December 22nd, 2006 | 0 Comments | Home |

We had a lovely night here at tom-mcgee.com world headquarters last night, with the whole family decorating the tree, hanging stockings, and all that other good stuff (ordering pizza, trying to keep Brandy from knocking ornaments off with her tail…). Here’s hoping Yours is a Merry One, and that your New Year is perfectly happy.

Gems from the Big Band Era

December 17th, 2006 | 2 Comments | Entertainment, Music |

I was at a concert/lecture recently on Roy Eldridge and Louis Armstrong, which got me to rummaging around through the trove of clips on Youtube. But what really grabbed me was the incredibly exciting playing of Gene Krupa. He was still a household name when I was growing up, but I had no real appreciation, never having seen stuff like this.

State of Denial

December 13th, 2006 | 0 Comments | Books, Politics |

Just got through Bob Woodward’s latest, State of Denial, part three of what looks to be ultimately a four-part series on Bush and the post-9/11 war program.
The book covers the period up to about July of this year. So if you read it soon, and then pick up the morning paper, you won’t have missed [...]

Free Software

December 10th, 2006 | 0 Comments | Tech Stuff |

The Simple Dollar has a list of “30 Essential” pieces of free software for Windoze. Worth a look. Some obvious ones are there, such as Firefox and Thunderbird holding down the top two positions. But did you know that there are freeware programs that do what Quicken does? Also, links to GIMPShop (Photoshop), Gaim (instant [...]

Good News

Good friend Jim Buchanan went home from the hospital today. His 6-week chemo stint ended up being half of that. Best wishes, and welcome back to Maplewood!

Funny how he’s so frequently got some appealing-looking woman hanging around in the background…

The Last Rose Of Summer

December 5th, 2006 | 2 Comments | Home |

It’s a special day here at tom-mcgee.com World Headquarters, the gala tenth anniversary of my thirty-ninth birthday. Can this be a gift from Global Warming? Why are there still roses blooming — even budding — in my garden the first week of December?

Don Butterfield

December 3rd, 2006 | 0 Comments | Music |

Noted with regret this morning, the passing of tuba player Don Butterfield. I had the pleasure of playing with Don a few times when I was with the Livingston Symphony. He was the most down-to-earth and approachable legend you’ll ever hope to find.
The LSO is a “volunteer” organization, and not every instrument we [...]
