Jersey City Travelogue

Having found a gainful consulting gig with Big Financial Firm in Jersey City. Any time I’m in a new neighborhood I like to go exploring, and found that “Joisey City” has some really nice qualities.

And The Winners Are…

November 30th, 2006 | 0 Comments | Home |

Last night was the annual Columbia Field Hockey dinner. I was surrounded by winners, literally. The woman on my left won a bottle of wine. Carolyn won a family pass to the Metropolitan Museum. And Claire, the field hockey star, got her certificate.

I Was Just Wondering

November 28th, 2006 | 4 Comments | Food |

Is there a word for the feeling you get when you get too much wasabi at once and if feels like your sinuses are about to burst into flames? What if someone made a wasabi slurpee — could you get that and a brain-freeze at the same time?

Bread

November 19th, 2006 | 0 Comments | Food, Home |

Back when I started cooking, I used to try to make bread. The recipes I tried were a tremendously time-consuming, labor-intensive struggle against the ingredients, and I never quite won. Thanks to the NY Times’ Minimalist column last Wednesday, I found a winner.

Misplaced Trust

We’ve become big fans of the “Trader Joe’s” franchise around here. Good quality, great prices, friendly service. I needed part of a bottle of red wine for a recipe I was making, and they had a special on bottles from the Robert Shaw vineyard. Yes, the “Jaws” guy. Thinking maybe he was doing the slumming […]

South Mountain in Autumn

November 11th, 2006 | 2 Comments | Home, Travelogues |

This afternoon Brandy and I enjoyed a warm sunny day walking through some of the scenic environs of South Mountain Reservation. One of our favorite spots has always been Hemlock Falls. After the three inches of rain earlier this week, this 35-foot cascade was in fine form.

Night On Bald Mountain

November 8th, 2006 | 0 Comments | Music |

I thought I should write a post on the election, but what can I write that isn’t being written better somewhere else in the blogosphere? It’s a beautiful thing, though. But try talkingpointsmemo.com, because I don’t have the time right now.

Instead, here’s a complete track of

Get Out And Vote

November 5th, 2006 | 0 Comments | Politics |

As you all know, Tuesday is a big one. Midterm elections have historically crappy turnout rates, and everything hinges on which side gets more of its people out to the polls. Watch out for the latest tactic being wheeled out by the GOP: harassing phone calls, designed to seem as though they’re from the Democratic side. […]

I Like XAMPP

November 3rd, 2006 | 0 Comments | Tech Stuff |

A guy at a freelance gig I recently had showed me this package, and it’s very cool. It’s a nice package that contains Apache, MySQL, Perl, PHP, FTP and a sendmail clone, all in one easy-to-install file. I suppose it’s old-hat to a lot of techno types, but having been in a Windows-only hothouse for […]
