South Mountain Conservancy

Up in the Reservation some good things are happening. Sunday morning I chatted with one of the board members who was devoting her Sunday morning to clearing out the seed pods of Japanese silk grass in the area planned to be a butterfly and hummingbird garden, so that there would a more diverse assortment of native plants next season.
The former deer paddock is now off-limits to deer, and open to people as the Conservancy is working on a reforestation project there. Special gates have been set up in a few strategic locations so people can come and go.

They’re also working on killing off some of the trees-of-paradise (aka “tree from hell”) that are taking space and resources from native species. We were up there last night wondering where they all came from; my theory was that they smuggled themselves in from Brooklyn, where they’re the tree of choice for vacant lots. The Conservancy is blazing a trail (the purple trail) through the new reforestation area. It’s not very long so far, but there’s potential. One thing I want to look into more is that it allows access to a spring and pond up there, which I’ve tracked all the way down to Maple Falls a few miles away near the southern end of the park.
It’s going to be fun to explore the newly opened area and watch it’s development. Good work all around!
