The Future of the Health Care Bill

January 19th, 2010 | 1 Comments | Politics |

With the Democrats’ supposedly filibuster-proof majority about to vanish, there seems to be three choices. One, hurry up before Brown is seated — at least two weeks from now — and get the compromise bill finished and voted on. Two, have the House pass the Senate bill untouched. In both instances, a bill would go to Obama to sign without any worry about Republican obstructionism.

The filibuster-proof majority is “supposedly” because for some reason known only to the almighty the Democrats spent the last four months filibustering themselves. Every blue-dog, plus of course the beloved and tireless Joe Lieberman, put himself directly in the path of getting a really good pill passed. But still, there’s the prospect of getting at least something passed.

Which brings us to option three, dropping the whole thing.

To me, and I’m guessing to millions of others like me who worked to get Obama elected with a large Democratic majority in Congress, that’s totally unacceptable. A whole year of supermajority status and they simply could not get it done? If the GOP had that much time with that many votes they’d have repealed the twentieth century. And we couldn’t even get rid of the pre-existing condition exclusion?

Like I said, unacceptable. Why should anyone lift a finger or send in a buck to these people if they can’t get anything done?

If it ends up being option three, I’m going to send money instead to Harry Reid’s Republican challenger in Nevada. The fish rots from the head, as they say, and if the majority leader can’t lead it’s time to find one who can.
