If this is Friday, then my Comcast internet connection must be down
September 11th, 2009 | 6 Comments | Tech Stuff |
Sure enough, I woke up this morning to see the network connection status as “Local only.”
Down to the basement, unplug the routers, unplug the cable modem, wait a few, replug the cable modem, wait for it to cycle on, plug back in the routers.
I have to go through this process several times a day with Comcast. But only on Fridays. The rest of the week it’s fine. I’ve called their customer service and they try to tell me it’s the routers, and that I need to plug my laptop directly into the cable modem. I don’t know how my routers would know it’s Friday.
Great advice. So much for using my network storage, my other computer, my network printer. Not to mention that my cable modem isn’t located at a workspace where I can plug my laptop in and then actually use it.
Anyone else suffer from this, or have any ideas?

Kudos to Comcast, they’ve been diligently following up on my problem. I’ll post the ultimate resolution here later this week.
Comcast gave me the direct line of one of their local tech guys, with instructions to call when the problem showed up. Today, Friday, right on schedule it did. Unfortunately I got his voice mail, and he didn’t call back before I needed to head out again.
The problem seems to be mostly ironed out, even though I was never quite able to connect with the guy at Comcast, The regular Friday outages have been gone for a couple of weeks, but there have been a few on other days. The service stayed up completely all this last weekend. So whatever they did, thanks!
I saw this and had to laugh. On Fridays my AT&T cell service would not work. I did have this problem with Comcast on Wednesdays. It was a long hard road getting to the root of the problem. I just gave up calling customer service. Gave into the fact there is no internet on Wednesdays.
Then out of the blue Comcast stepped up their customer service game. I came home one day and found a note on my door from Comcast saying that the problem was interference with the little airport near my house. They came in with some tools to look for a signal leak, found a few. Problem solved.
The Friday outages came back. This time I eliminated one of the routers, and last week the service was continuous. We shall see.
