The Soft Bigotry of Low Expectations?

October 3rd, 2008 | | Politics |

To hijack a phrase we’ve heard before. How did Sarah Palin do in the debate last night? I missed the first 1/3, heard the second 1/3 on the radio, saw the conclusion on the teevee. She was better on the radio — her rather fixed facial expression didn’t help at all. Biden came across better on TV, because he was more animated and fluid in his expression and posture.

As for content, well that’s where the headline comes in. Once you’ve touched bottom there’s nowhere to go but up. Still, what did they say? James Fallows hits it on the head:

How was it, considered strictly as a debate? Of course Biden did a far better job — he answered the questions rather than moving straight to talking points, he drew on a vastly broader range of factual references, he attacked his opponents in ways that were relevant to the subject under discussion. But this is not how the event was being watched or scored.

Emphasis added.
