Died Monday night at age 82. He’d been very ill for a long time after (I think) a series of strokes made it very difficult for him to work. I always enjoyed the light, playful and transparent feeling of his work.
I remember one of my favorite shows, back when you could still find galleries in SoHo, was of ceramics he made in Japan, using his collage techniques for the glazing. There are few photos on the web, but the don’t really do justice to the subtle beauty of the objects in real life.
Fun fact: He was from Port Arthur, TX, which was also the home town of Janis Joplin.
