Time Waster

Just a quick post to warn you off of this jQuery plugin.

The “Uploadify” SWF/JS combo used to be pretty good. In fact, I still have it in place for some projects. But the upgrade to 3.x is a disaster. Many or most of the options and functions have changed names. Some of them are reversed, causing confusion like this:

‘uploader’ : ‘uploadify/uploadify.swf’,
‘script’ : ‘uploadify/upload.php’,

‘swf’ : ‘uploadify/uploadify.swf’,
‘uploader’ : ‘uploadify/upload.php’,

Which is kind of pointless.

The documentation is awful, and the documentation for the old version has totally disappeared, so even if you decide you want to stick with the old one and not rewrite all your .js files, more modest changes are way too difficult.

But the biggest blunder is what’s happened to their support and forums pages. They’re awash with spam, some of it not cleaned out in months.

I’ve wasted the better part of a day trying to fix what should have been a minor bug. Time to look for another solution.
